Maritime Law
Maritime law refers to the regulations and statutes that govern waterborne
trade, travel and recreation throughout the United States. These laws
are based on some of the oldest legal writings in the history of mankind
and can be found in virtually all nations throughout the world.
In the United States, there are two major laws that regulate a great deal of maritime activities. The Jones Act and the Longshoreman and Harbor Workers’ Compensation Act are laws that stipulate the rights of sailors and dock workers injured at their jobs. These laws clarify who is protected, under what circumstances they are protected, and what the responsible party must do to compensate victims.
Although maritime law involves some of the most complicated legal statutes, Chris Parks has expertly handled cases of victims of accidents at sea that other attorneys might have considered unwinnable. In one example of a tragic accident that should have been prevented, a seaman was lost overboard while suffering hallucinations because the captain of the vessel refused to authorize an immediate MedEvac. This case was fraught with a number of legal difficulties, but the sailor’s family deserved justice for the loss of their son, so, undaunted, Chris Parks fought and won a fair verdict against the shipping owner for their neglect.
Regardless of whether you were injured on the high seas on blue or brown water, or on inland waterways, if you are a dock worker or seaman, you have rights. Maritime law is extremely complicated, so it is best to have an attorney with experience litigating these cases. Chris Parks, P.C. has extensive experience in admiralty litigation and has made numerous million dollar recoveries for their clients in maritime cases. Let us fight for the justice you deserve.
